Winter driving can be extremely hazardous at times due to poor road conditions or reduced visibility from rain, fog, blowing debris, ice, or snow. If you must drive, consider the following:
Keep your gas tank full.
Drive with headlights on.
Travel in the day, don’t travel alone, and keep others informed of your schedule.
Carry tire chains, when traveling in snow areas.
Carry an emergency supply kit
Stay on main roads; avoid back road shortcuts.
Pull off the highway if necessary, and if you do:
Turn on hazard lights.
Remain in your vehicle.
Run the engine and heater about 10 minutes each hour to be careful not to waste battery power.

Help Prevent Fires, Stay Grounded:
• Keep lamps, light fixtures, and light bulbs away from anything that can burn, such as lamp shades, bedding, curtains, and clothing.
• Replace cracked and damaged electrical.
• Use extension cords for temporary wiring only. Consider having additional circuits or receptacles added by a qualified electrician.
• If you have young children in your home have tamper-resistant electrical receptacles.
• Call a qualified electrician or landlord if you have recurring problems with blowing fuses or tripping circuit breakers, discolored or warm wall outlets, flickering lights or a burning or rubbery small coming form an appliance.

The National Weather Service issues Red Flag Warnings & Fire Weather Watches to alert fire departments of the onset, or possible onset, of critical weather and dry conditions that could lead to rapid or dramatic increases in wildfire activity.

Red Flag Warning is issued for weather events which may result in extreme fire behavior that will occur within 24 hours. A Fire Weather Watch is issued when weather conditions could exist in the next 12-72 hours. A Red Flag Warning is the highest alert. During these times extreme caution is urged by all residents, because a simple spark can cause a major wildfire. A Fire Weather Watch is one level below a warning, but fire danger is still high. The aforementioned weather patterns coupled with low relative humidity, strong winds, dry fuels, the possibility of dry lightning strikes, or any combination of the above.

Are you doing the right thing, the wrong way?
Are you doing the right thing the wrong way - for example, trying to eliminate the fire hazards around your home and in the process starting a wildland fire? Each year CAL FIRE responds to more than 1,600 fires started by Californians using equipment the wrong way.

During certain times of the year, when fire danger is high, residential debris burning of dead vegetation is unsafe. However, homeowners should always check with their local Fire Department and local air quality management agency before burning. For more information on debris burning safety download an educational fact sheet.

Research has shown that inexperience and immaturity combined with speed, drinking and driving, not wearing seat belts, distracted driving (cell phone use, loud music, other teen passengers, etc.), drowsy driving, nighttime driving, and other drug use are behaviors that contribute to teen-related collisions.

HELP US KEEP OUR TEENS SAFE!

The primary job of a SMOKE ALARM is to protect you from fires while you are asleep. Thus, your smoke alarms should be located between any sleeping person and the rest of the house outside bedrooms or sleeping areas.
